Pudlo Pudlat, ᐳᓗ ᐳᓚ

Settlement: Cape Dorset / Kinngait

(1916-1992) — E7-899

"I tried to portray the Inuit land - the North - and the white man's land - the South..."1

Amadjuak, in what is now Nunavut (formerly part of the Northwest Territories), was Pudlat's birthplace in 1916 on February 4th. The artist passed away on December 28th 1992, in Cape Dorset.

Pudlat's sense of humour, curiosity and philosophical approach to life define Pudlat as much as his innovative art. He was known for having a "keen intelligence and curiosity," as well as for his introspection, and for an insightfulness that he applied not only to his own life but as well to Inuit and non-Inuit culture.2 Other observers have noted his "visual sense, his versatility and innovativeness in subject matter and technique."3 Dorothy Speak believed that "no other Inuit artist can be said to have bridged the old and new so adroitly."4

Maria Muehlen5 described his work as having "fun, irony and wit." His work, she observed, is filled with "layers of meaning." Marie Routledge stated that the artist is unique in his "talent to observe, to compare and to extrapolate."6 He is also described as the most "consistently whimsical of all the Cape Dorset artists."7

Dorothy Speak wrote8:
It may have been this curiosity of Pudlo's to observe worlds beyond his own, and his appetite for knowledge and for new experiences, that have set him apart from other Inuit graphic artists.

Additionally, she observed "his often poignant recollections of the great sorrows in his life enrich our understandings of the vicissitudes of life on the land."9 Sandrine Coronat waxed philosophical when describing the artist and his work10:

[He] went beyond what the eye sees, transcending to an intimate and poetic universe of images of daily life which are maintained and enhanced by deep traditional and cultural understanding and knowledge.

Of his own work Pudlat made the following observations11,12,13:
My brain and pencil seem to go together when I start to draw something in my head.
At times when I draw, I am happy, but sometimes it is very hard. I have been drawing a long time now. I only draw what I think, but sometimes I think the pencil has a brain too.

It is a reflection on Pudlat's character and his "indomitable spirit" that he was able to create such whimsical works despite the extreme hardships in his life.14 There was the loss of children, wives, and friends through illness, hunting accidents, accidental poisoning, and suicide. He once reflected15,16:

I have been through a lot. Today, when people are going through a hard time, they give up. They even commit suicide.

Various health problems introduced Pudlo to life in the south through various hospitalizations.17 This exposure to the south introduced to a different world.

He accepted the south with its essential strangeness and modernity. His ability to incorporate those differences enabled him to become an Inuit pioneer in the "utilization of modern imagery" in his art.18

Maria Muehlen observed that this imagery was more than just straight representation. His work was filled with "irony," "visual punning," as well as a "juxtapos[ition of] contemporary themes with traditional imagery."19,20 Marie Routledge noted that rather than being intimidated or reacting negatively to the culture and environment of the south Pudlat responded with an21:

Openness to experience, this eagerness to know, to understand, to assimilate the unfamiliar into the familiar, that is in a large sense the key to Pudlo's art.

In the mid-1970s the modern world came to Cape Dorset with permanent long distance telephone service, electricity, television, and regular air flights. Marie Routledge recounted a story of Pudlat's first encounter with an airplane.22 The artist was not interested the people leaving Cape Dorset or those debarking, nor was he curious about the goods being delivered. What fascinated Pudlat was the airplane.

Modern transportation and trips to the south meant that not only did his imagery changed but so did his visual representations of what he had seen.

Air travel showed Pudlat an aerial view of his world and changed the way he represented landscapes, animals and people. His representations of animals would become, for example, more "abstract" and "flattened."23 As well, his overhead views of landscapes would have what Dorothy Speak called "a mapmaker's exactitude of detail."24 Pudlat's landscapes, Routledge felt, were more than a "exploration of a geographical reality."25 What concerned Pudlat was a "quest for understanding the greater implications of space within a social context."26

Pudlat had commented27:
I really love making landscapes - the sky and everything... I like the scenery and I really love to draw it.

The art mediums he worked with, such as lithography and acrylics, also changed the way he represented figures, animals and landscapes.28 Unlike artists in the south Inuit artists' experimentation with new mediums depended on both their introduction (i.e., their delivery to the north) as well as their availability. This availability would often have the effect of creating discernable stages in their work.

It is believed that Pudlat began drawing in 1959 or 1960 using mostly graphite on ordinary paper. He had been sculpting before then and possibly stopped carving between the late 1960s and 1974.29 Pentel felt pens were introduced to Cape Dorset in 1967. In response, Pudlat's work went into a stage, Routledge believed, that showed a "tentative approach to colour often with one color dominating."30

Visiting artists were also an influence on Inuit artists. In the mid-1970s Cape Dorset saw many southern printmakers visit and some who stayed.31 Lithographer Wallace Brennan's arrival also had an effect on Pudlat. While he didn't feel at ease in the printshop's setting the process did teach Pudlat to work with an artwork's entire area and to : "open up" his drawings.32

Sometimes marketplace demands and limitations of a medium also had an effect.

In 1974 the artists in Cape Dorset were asked to stop using, for example, felt pens as the colours they created were "unstable and impermanent."33

Another influence was the introduction of acrylic washes in the late 1970s.34 Overall Pudlat's preferred medium was a "combination of acrylic wash and coloured pencils."35

Speak believed that Pudlat's work went through distinct phases.36 These phases were not just the result of external influences but were produced through Pudlat's internal journey as an artist.

In 1961 to 1965 Pudlat worked with graphite on paper. The next phase she saw as transitional i.e., the time period from 1963 to 1969, when he "struggled" with both "imagery and materials."37 A more confident period followed when images such as the airplane, musk-ox, homes and landscapes became prominent in his work. From 1975 to 1980 his work became more "complex" and "intellectual."38 In the last phase of his work Pudlat produced works that were more "abstract."39

By the end of his career Pudlat produced 4,500 drawings and 180 prints as well as several sculptures.40 In 1990 the National Gallery of Canada held a retrospective of Pudlat's drawings. He would be the first northern artist to be accorded such recognition.41

Through his artwork we are able to appreciate the spirit and wry humour that inspired Pudlo Pudlat's life and art.

"I have always fought for life"42 - Pudlo Pudlat
