Mathewsie Saviadjuk

Settlement: Cape Dorset / Kinngait

(1950) — E7-1377

www.spiritwrestler.com Mathew is the eldest of the four sons, all sculptors, of carver Joe Jaw. He is a more than capable hunter, a natural leader and an outstanding artist. His favourite themes embrace wildlife of the natural world and subjects from the spirit world, which he portrays with an awareness of the power that both exude. He has bridged the gap between two cultures and is a man of the new North: he was director of the West Baffin Co-operative for a number of years, served on several regional boards that ultimately led to the formation of the new territory of Nunavut and is at present the mayor of Cape Dorset. Mathew is one of the leading artists and a spokesman for his generation in Cape Dorset, and one of the key mentors for the younger generation of carvers in his community. --------------------- Mathew Saviadjuk is a man of many identities, just one of which is the experimental and iconoclastic artist represented here. He is also a hunter and a fisherman, and the current mayor of Cape Dorset. These multiple roles are often reflected in the pure dynamism of his transformative sculptures. The moment of chaos as one spirit becomes another is captured in the critical point of uncertainty when any one of them could become dominant. The artist himself, like many Inuit of his generation, lives in this state of flux, balancing traditional and modern lives, shifting identities as need demands. --------- MATHEW SAVIADJUK Born: 1950 Male E7-1377 Resides: Cape Dorset Sculpture Mathew prefers working with soapstone.
