Peter Aningmiuq

Settlement: Cape Dorset / Kinngait

(1913-1986) — E7-1148

Peter Aningmiuq lived a traditional life on the land in camps before he and his family moved to settle in Cape Dorset around 1962. Peter's wife, Alashua Aningmiuq (1914-1972) was a graphic artist. Their sons, Jolly (1954 -), Salomonie (1956 -), and adopted son Kavavau Aningmiuq (1969-) are all carvers in Cape Dorset.

Aninmiuq carved the traditional way, gathering his stone from open mines in the surrounding area. He mostly worked with marble and serpentinine. Serpentinine is a hard green stone similar to jade which requires a high level of technical skill to carve. His works emphasize his connection to the land and the resilience and beauty of the Arctic landscape itself.
