Joanasie Solomonie

Settlement: Cape Dorset / Kinngait

(1938) — E7-1171

not sure of exact date of death except for year Inuit Artists Print Workbook grandson of Pootoogook and Ningeookaluk, son of Solomonie Pootoogook, half brother of Soroseelutu Ashoona, nephew of Kananginak, Eegyvudluk, Pudlat and Paulassie Pootoogook. there appears to be no mention of Joanassie Salamonie in printmaking "literature", although it is clear that he wa involved in the early years. As a youngster he could speak English well and therefore was selected to work for Jim Houston in the late 50s, early 60s. One of his jobs was to be interpreter which brought him into contact with the artists to whom houston was teaching printmaking. Apparently Houston showed Salamonie the techniques he wanted the printmakers to try, and in demonstrating, Salamonie did some of the printmaking, especially transferring images and cutting blocks. He also did some engraving in 1963-4 and designed a UNICEF card in 1961, which was originally attributed to Echalook Pingwartook (as were his early printing endeavors). (interviews in CD, 7/89, 3/90, and pers comm, terry Ryan, 9/89 and James Houston)
