Mannumi Shaqu, ᒪᓄᒥ ᓴᑯ

Settlement: Cape Dorset / Kinngait

(1917-2000) — E7-824

Manomie Shako ask Duncan if this is the same man? was born in 1917, and now resides in Cape Dorset. He describes his life through interview. "I was born in a winter camp near Dorset. I used to remember how old I was but I have a poor memory and have forgotten now. I know it was around the time Cape Dorset became a settlement. I was born in an igloo. My father was Towatuga and my mother was Karalooatoo. When I was young I loved to follow my grandfather and the other men in the camp hunting. I don't remember what it was like to hunt with spears and harpoons since most of the men had rifles. As a boy I was afraid of whiteman because I imagined they wanted to kidnap me. "When I was a teenager I started to carve..At first I used to sit and etch many ivory tusks. I later carved stone. My family needed money for food so this is why I carved. I enjoy carving women out of hard dark stone best. For many years I have carved. I usually carve every day. I have no other job." ------------- Mannumi Shaqu (Cape Dorset) B. 1917 One of the carvers selected for the original masterworks exhibition, Mannumi is also father to carvers Enook Manomie and Towatuga Sagouk of Iqaluit. His drawing style was quite representational and it is interesting to note the inclusion of the horizon line and the attempt at perspective in his work from the mid-1960s. ----------------------------------- Munamee Shaqu Elder/Carver - born 1917 Tikkut "I was the first man to ; to Iqaluit alone without anyonetelling me directions. I went overland, not by the coast. This was justafter the 2nd World War, when we lived the old way, not the way we do now.It was when it was hard to get food. We live the Kabloona way of life now.The younger generation is living life now in a way that is different frommy youth so that I'm living the white man's way through them. I was raisedby older parents, so I heard a lot of stories from them. I know many stories.I had a father-in-law one time who was a shaman, his name was Alagook. The shamans were having a meeting to ; tell the family they found a frozenman. They asked my father-in-law to take the man to his family. That manwas frozen, but a spirit was moving through that frozen body, and therewould be movement here and there in whatever part of his body, and finallythe person who was frozen spoke, revived by the spirit." ------------- MANNUMI SHAQU Born: January 7, 1917 Male E7-824 Resides: Cape Dorset; also lived in Iqaluit and Coral Harbour Sculpture "I was born in a winter camp near Dorset.
