Mary Qayuaryuk

TWO OWLS

MARY QAYUARYUK (1908-1982), E7-1012, CAPE DORSET / KINNGAIT
TWO OWLS

stone, c. 1970

4.75" x 4" x 1.5" — 12.1 x 10.2 x 3.8 cm.

Provenance:
The Sparham Collection of Inuit Art, Wales, U.K.

Note:
It is almost inconceivable that these two birds were not crafted by the hands of Latcholassie or his father Tudlik. The big legs, wide circular eyes positioned atop the subtle protrusion of a beak emphasized by an upside down “V” are characteristics these artists have made their signature. However, Mary who was perhaps less prolific but produced carvings and graphics during the same period, carved similar looking birds. It is not for us to say who came up with the “look” first but easy to assume that inspiration or collaboration might have occurred over the years between these artists.

Estimate: $400—600
