Bio:

Kananginak Pootoogook was a sculptor, designer, draughtsman, and a printmaker.

Pootoogook was born on January 1, 1935 at the traditional Inuit camp Ikerasak on Baffin Island, Nunavut, to Josephie Pootoogook, leader of the camp, and Sarah Ningeokuluk. The family lived a traditional lifestyle hunting and trapping, living in an igloo in the winter and a sod house in the summer.

Pootoogook married Shooyoo from Cape Dorset in 1957. They lived at Ikirisaq until 1958, when they moved to Cape Dorset because of Pootoogook’s failing health. There, Pootoogook began working for James Houston, a Canadian artist, designer, author, and filmmaker. Houston served as a civil administrator at Cape Dorset, West Baffin, where he taught the Inuit the techniques of printmaking. Houston also played an important role in popularizing Inuit art in the US and Canada.

Pootoogook was a prominent community leader. He was instrumental in the formation of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative in 1959, and served for several years as president of its Board of Directors.

Pootoogook worked in a variety of media ranging from drawings, prints, lithographs to sculptures and engravings. He created vivid, documentary-style drawings of Arctic wildlife, hunting scenes, daily life and Inuit culture. In 1978, four of his images were included in a limited-edition portfolio released by the World Wildlife Commission.

In 1980, Pootoogook was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 1997, Pootoogook was commissioned by the Romeo Leblanc, then the Governor General of Canada, to construct an Inukshuk in Cape Dorset which would be deconstructed and shipped to Ottawa for display. Pootoogook and his son Johnny went to Ottawa to re-assemble the Inukshuk on the grounds of Rideau Hall as part of a tribute to Indigenous people in Canada.

His works have been exhibited in major galleries and museums around the world and are part of numerous collections, including the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec in Quebec City; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

In May 2017, Pootoogook’s work was included in the 57th Venice Biennale, making him the first Inuit artist to have his work included in an international exhibition.
