Mikigak Kingwatsiak was born into an artistic family in 1943. His brother was sculptor and printmaker Iyola Kingwatsiak. His sisters Anna Kingwatsiak, Keleemeeoomee Samualie, and Tyle Adla were also successful artists. Their father was a shaman. 

Kingwatsiak is best known for his stone and marble sculptures depicting human and animal figures. He has also been known to represent spiritual and imaginary beings, especially in his drawings. 

Kingwatsiak has been included in various editions of the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection, and has exhibited internationally in England, Germany, and the United States. Kingwatsiak's work has been collected by important institutions such as the Canadian Museum of History, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Canadian Museum of Anthropology.
