Iyola Kingwatsiak

Settlement: Cape Dorset / Kinngait

(1933-2000) — E7-914

Northern Rock Susan Gustavison (1999) i started carving in 1959 around the time printmaking began. i used to carve the stone blocks for printing but befoe that I did some sculpting. The stonecut blocks were more difficult to carve than the sculpture they have very fine, small lines. ----------- Inuit Artists Print Workbook only year of death known was married to Pootagook Kingwatsiak, son of Kingwatsiak, brother of Tye, Anna, Keeleemeeoomee, Mikkikak Kingwatsiak (by adoption) worked on the experimental collections with Jim Houston and a few other Cape Dorset pioneers. he continued his participation into the 70s. Like the other long time printmakers, was a craftsman in almost every medium SC, St, SS, SC/S, SCSS, etching and engraving, as well as an excellent and renowned sculptor. Iyola was one of the first artists to try copper engraving, a technqiue which he used with great skill for himself and others, and he was also a stone block cutter. In 1984 he re-joined the current group fo printmakers, producing stonecut and stonecut/stencils prints for the collections through 1993, bringing his total participation in the West Baffin print program to about 22 collections. ------- Better known for his carvings, Iyola also participated in the Cape Dorset print collections. --------- Ê"I started printmaking in 1959 on the first edition. Beforethat a few of us were learning printmaking. When Jim Houston talked ofstarting a co-op, I didn't know what he meant. We were all given cardswith our name on them, membership cards. Wherever you are, you have totry and be happy. If you aren't happy, it's very hard. In the workplace,I want to be happy about what I'm doing....even when there is no interpretersometimes I will have fun with the Kabloona (say hi, shake hands). Thecountry food is like the Inuktitut language. They are alike, very importantto the Inuit. I love seal meat, I remember always having it as a littleboy." ------------- IYOLA KINGWATSIAK (IOLA) Born: August 3, 1933 Male E7-914 Resides: Cape Dorset Sculpture, Drawings, Prints, Printmaking Iyola Kingwatsiak's wife Pootoogook is a graphic artist.
