Bio:

Victoria Mamnguqsualak was an Inuit artist born in 1930 in the Gary Lake area, Keewatin region, Nunavut. Shecame from a large family of artists, and was the daughter of Jessie Oonark, one of Baker Lake and Canada’s most distinguished artists. Her siblings included artists Janet Kigusiuq, Nancy Pukingrnak, Peggy Qablunaaq Aittauq, Mary Yuusipik Singaqti, Josiah Nuilaalik, Miriam Marealik Qiyuk, and William Noah.

Together with her family, Mamnguqsualak lived a nomadic life until her thirties. In 1963, to avoid starvation, the family moved to Baker Lake, where Mamnguqsualak became involved with an artist co-op and learned to sew wall hangings, carve, and draw. Even though she learned to sew as a child by watching her grandmother make caribou clothing, it was in the co-op environment where she was able to expand her artistic practice and learn new styles and techniques.

In 1970, eight of Mamnguqsualak’s prints were part of the first Baker Lake Print Collection. 

Continuing her education and career, Mamnguqsualak graduated from a drawing and printmaking program at Nunavut Arctic College in 1997.

Mamnguqsualak’sworks often display complex scenes depicting Inuit mythology and legends. They have been widely praised and have appeared in nearly 100 exhibitions in Canada and internationally. Her art can be found in many collections across Canada and the USA, including the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Winnipeg, and many more.
