Atungauyak Eeseemailee

Settlement: Pannirtuq / Pangnirtung

(1923-1989) — E6-66

father of Gyta and Jeanie Eeseemailie Atungauja Eeseemailie (1923-1988) "Since I started to draw, my drawings have come closer to how I want them to be, especially when I am steady. There are some aspects of Inuit life that I know inside out. It is my pleasure to draw the things that I know. Often my hands shake, but when they allow me, I forge ahead and concentrate on the things I know best." Born at Illutalik camp, Atungauja eventually settled with his family in Pangnirtung. He was the father of Hanna Akulukjuk, a tapestry artist. Atungauja started drawing in the mid-1960s while recuperating from tuberculosis in Toronto. Although his right arm often shook due to illness, his drawings show meticulous detail and subtlety. ------ Eeseemailie, Atungauyak Atoomwyack;Atoomowyak;Ishmael;Eeseemailie; References: NLCx;LCx;BNQx (See list of References) Technique: Printmaking;Painting;Drawing Sex: Male Address: 1983 Pangnirtung Northwest Territories Canada Born: 1923 UNKNOWN UNKNOWN UNKNOWN File Location: National Gallery of Canada - Library and Archives ----------------
