Seepee Ipeelie, ᓯᐱ ᐃᐱᓕ

Seepee Ipeelie was born on February 3, 1940 in Pangnirtung. He is the son of notable artist Nuveeya Ipeelie. 

Seepee began his career as a carver after a hospitalization in the South. After this hospitalization, he attended school in Edmonton before returning North to Iqaluit where he permanently settled. Ipeelie’s career began to surge in the mid 1970s when his work was widely circulated in Canada. By the 1980s, he was extensively exhibiting across Canada and internationally. 

His work has been collected by many major institutions, including the Canadian Museum of History, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Dennos Museum Center in Michigan, the Red Deer and District Museum in Alberta, the Inuit ACultural Institute in Rankin Inlet, and the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery. 

Ipeelie passed away in 2000 and is remembered for his role in shaping the reputation and recognition of Inuit art.
