Nanogak, Agnes, graphic artist (b on Baillie Island, NWT 12 Nov 1925, d at Holman, Northwest Territories 5 May 2005). Known for her energetic and colourful depictions of traditional Inuit myths and legends, Nanogak was a prominent contributor to every print collection published by the Holman artists' co-operative since 1967. Daughter of William Natkutsiak (Billy Banksland), who came from Alaska to the Canadian Arctic with the explorer Vilhjalmur STEFANSSON, since 1937 Nanogak made her home in Holman, NWT, where she married William Goose, raised a large family and developed her artistic career. Her narrative prints and drawings evoked a rich variety of stories reflecting the Alaskan roots of her father and the Mackenzie Delta/Copper Eskimo culture of her mother and husband. Nanogak illustrated 2 books of Inuit stories, Tales from the Igloo, edited and translated by Maurice Metayer (1972), and More Tales from the Igloo, which she also wrote (1986). A little of her own history was told then:Her father, William Natkusiak, came from Nome, Alaska, to the Canadian Arctic as a guide for Stefansson. In Baillie, Natkusiak meet & married Agnes' mother, Topsy Ikiunak. In 1937, when Agnes was 12, the family moved to Holman, a tiny Victoria Island community.... roughly 1,600 miles north of Edmonton. In 1943, when 18 years old, Agnes married there the hunter Wallace Kunak Goose. Together, they raised seven children. Wallace Goose is here today sharing this special honour. For she is the first Inuit artist ever to receive an honorary degree from any university, anywhere.She is one of Canada's major artists, developing her career out of her rich cultural background.... She inherited the Alaskan tradition from her father who, even when she was a child, would encourage her to draw. Because of her mother, she was in contact with the different cultures & tribes living in the Mackenzie Delta & along the coast up to Baillie Island. When she was young, she listened to the old story tellers of Victoria Island. Later, she found in her husband's grandmother, Mamie Mamovak, another story teller of rare gifts....Her prints & drawings are dominated by shamanism - witch doctors, spirit dancers, sorcerers - by bird & animal spirits as well as by the games & contests, the dances & costumes, the drumming & chanting traditional to Inuit celebrations. Her work also reflects the closeness with which the Inuit lived on the land & their traditional dependence on animals...."Agnes died on the 5th of May, 2001. She was special for us and some of her drawings are part of theMount's permanent collection.----------------The community of Holman was saddened in May 2001 by the loss of one of its most prominent artists, Agnes Nanogak Goose. Agnes Nanogak Goose was a strong artistic presence at Holman and her work was a mainstay in the print collection. Since 1967, when her first prints were published, a total of 159 of her drawings have been translated into prints. Best known to southern collectors by her Inuit name Nanogak, she also used the surname of her late husband Wallace Goose to sign her work. Her son, Billy Goose, used the distinctive chop of a goose to mark his prints and drawings in the 1960s. Billy's son, Rex Goose, is a talented carver and graphic artist.Nanogak's roots lie in the Western Arctic. Her father, Natkutsiak (Billy Banksland) came from Nome, Alaska and her mother, Topsy Ekiona, grew up in the Mackenzie Delta region, near Tuktoyaktuk. Her father worked as a harpoonist on whaling boats, and sailed with explorer, Vilj‡himir Stef‡nsson, as he attempted to find the Northwest Passage from the west. Natkutsiak and Ekiona married and travelled between Baillie Island in the Tuktoyaktuk area and Banks Island where a trading post allowed them to take advantage of trapping and trading opportunities.Nanogak and her brother, Alec Aliknak Banksland, were born on Baillie Island. The family relocated to Sachs Harbour on Banks Island, and later moved to the present site of Holman on Queen's Bay in 1934, when Nanogak was nine years old. No other families lived there at the time. Everyone else was camping at Minto Inlet or Walker Bay. Nanogak remembers how different everything was, particularly the dialect and the clothing. It was a rich sealing area and the family remained there. Nanogak's mother passed away in 1943 and her father died in 1949. In 1947, she married Wallace Goose from the Tuktoyaktuk and Kugluktuk (Coppermine) areas.Nanogak's father made drawings when she was young, stimulating artistic interest in both Nanogak and her brother, Aliknak. Intrigued by the drawings and prints of the early 1960s, Nanogak decided to try drawing. Father Tardy laughed when he saw her first efforts in 1964. He told her there was something missing and he encouraged her to take the drawing home for completion. Nanogak recalls that he would not tell her what was wrong with it. Another drawing of a smiling human face was made and shown to Tardy. This time he pronounced it a finished drawing. Nanogak then realized she had neglected to draw pupils in the eyes of her earlier figures, making them effectively blind. Tardy was to give her much support, indicating that her narrative drawings based on the stories of her youth were powerful and rich expressions.The stories and drum dance songs that Nanogak learned as a child were her favourite drawing themes. With Jimmy and Nora Memorana, she taught songs from the Mackenzie Delta area to young people in the community. Today, adults and children perform these "Western-style" songs and dances in semi-weekly drum dances at the community hall.Nanogak's earliest drawings were made with graphite pencil, but when felt tip pens became available about 1970, she delighted in making fully coloured drawings. She first employed colour as a notational device to guide the printmakers, but colour soon became an integral part of the drawing.Nanogak recognized the ability of her images to tell stories, and was frustrated that the Art Shop suspended printmaking activities for the year 2001 due to financial difficulties. Diagnosed with lung cancer in late 2000, she felt the urgency to continue her work which she believed would "help people remember the stories."A solo exhibition of Nanogak's drawings opens at The Winnipeg Art Gallery on December 5, 2002. In 1983, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau presented her print "Five Geese" to Prince Charles and Princess Diana of England during their visit to Canada. In 1985 she received an honorary doctorate from Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium and Israel. Born and raised in the Western Arctic Agnes's parents, and her early life on the land, greatly influenced her work. Her father Natkutsiak [Billy Banksland] from Nome, Alaska was well known for his association with explorer Vilj‡himir Stef‡nsson. He worked on whaling boats and sailed with Stef‡nsson, who was attempting to find the Northwest Passage from the west, acting as his guide. Her mother, Topsy Ekiona, grew up in the Mackenzie Delta region, near Tuktoyaktuk. The family moved to the present site of Holman on Victoria Island in 1934, when she was nine years old.Nanogak's father stimulated her interest in drawing. She became intrigued by both her father's work and later by the drawings and prints that were beginning to be produced in the community. Encouraged by Father Henri Tardy, an oblate missionary, she began to draw using graphite on paper in the early 1960's. She introduced felt-tip pen, and the resulting use of vibrant colour, into the drawings when they became available in 1970. In 1967 she started to participate in the newly founded printmaking program and since that time 159 prints have been translated from her drawings.She is noted for her skill as a storyteller, artist and teacher. Deeply committed to helping people remember the stories passed in an oral tradition, her narrative drawings and prints, based on stories and drum dance songs from her youth, relay her continuing interest in traditional myth and shamanism. In 1972 she created illustrations for a book of legends called 'Tales from the Igloo' and in 1986 both narrated and illustrated the second publication 'More Tales from the Igloo'. She also participated in an important youth initiative teaching traditional songs at the Holman community centre. These drum dances and songs continue to be performed today, in conjunction with contemporary music, during weekly community hall gatherings and larger festivals.Agnes Nanogak died on May 5, 2001.The Centre for Contemporary Canadian Art The Canadian Art Database: 001 Canadian Artis
