Ikayukta Tunnillie

Settlement: Cape Dorset / Kinngait

(1911-1980) — E7-927

Technique: Drawing Sex: Female mother of Kakulu File Location: University of British Columbia - Fine Arts Library National Gallery of Canada - Library and Archives Winnipeg Art Gallery - Clara Lander Library ------------ Biography Born Canada: Northwest Territories, Iqaluit area on 22 December 1911 Died in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, 4 September 1980 Artist Statement We lived out at camp for a long time. When we came here, I started to draw, That was 1963 maybe. I don't remember the year exactly. I just remember that people started drawing while I was out camping. I took my drawings to Terry Ryan. It was hard when I first started drawing. I used to watch my daughter Kakulu drawing, and I thought to myself I couldn't do that. But my daughter told me that I could do it. I started to draw then. I learned from my daughter. I have not seen my daughter's drawings for a long time now. She does not look at my drawings either. I neve think about my drawings being made into prints when I make them. It makes me happy when they are made into prints though. I never thought about my drawings going down South. Now that I think about that, it makes me think that I will have to think very hard before I draw! When I finish my drawings, I put them on the wall next to my bed, and I just look at them. I don't really think about if i like them or not. One time, though, I started to think that my drawings are pretty good. I said to myself, "this time, they won't put them in the garbage!" I try to make straight lines when I draw. It is hard for me to make straight lines. It was getting hard for me to draw just on the paper so I started to cut a piece of cardboard and started to trace around it. I move the cardboard to another palce on the paper and trace around it again. That's how I draw sometimes. I have to think first before I cut the cardboard - think about how the drawing will look. I draw only what comes to my head. The prints turned out pretty good. I don't like my drawings when I draw them sometimes. After they have been printed, they are pretty good, and then i like them. ------- Ikayukta Tunnillie Born Canada: Northwest Territories, Iqaluit area, 22 December 1911 Died in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, 04 September 1980
