Isabel Rorick
Haida Raven Clan
(1955)
Born in 1955 in Old Masset, British Columbia, Isabel Rorick uses the teachings of her ancestors to create beautifully intricate baskets and hats from spruce root. Rorick comes from a family of weavers who she studied with and now works alongside. Her grandmother introduced her to the art of weaving at the age of 13, and by the age of 19, she was an accomplished weaver. Rorick often collaborates with her sister to make her labour-intensive pieces, which can take months to complete. She respectfully harvests the spruce roots herself, dedicating her life to the preservation and promotion of weaving as an internationally celebrated artform.
Rorick is a member of the Haida Raven clan, and was honoured with the British Columbia Achievements First Nations Art Award in 2009.
