Sam Henderson
Kwakwaka'wakw
(1905-1982)
Sam Henderson was born in 1905 to Kenneth Henderson and Lucy Johnson. He grew up between Blunden Harbour and Alert Bay, British Columbia. He was raised to respect his Kwakwaka'wakw heritage from a young age, and has instilled this value into his children. Henderson is a self taught carver, as well as a hereditary Nax Wax Da’x Chief. His sons Bill and Mark have followed in their father’s footsteps, also becoming carvers.
Henderson is known for completing a totem pole for the British Columbia Centennial Route of the Totems in 1966. He died in 1982.
