Jim Charlie
Squamish
(1967)
Jim Charlie was born in 1967 on the Capilano Reserve in North Vancouver, British Columbia. He learned the art of carving from his grandfather, Dominique Charlie, as well as other carvers from the Salish Nation including Floyd Joseph, Jacob Lewis, and the Gitksan artist, Phil Janze.
He was taught the culture and traditions of his heritage at a young age, which has inspired his artistic practice. Charlie’s career has spanned three decades, with his body of work consisting primarily of wood carvings. He has exhibited at the Seattle Art Fair, and was commissioned to create a work for the Vancouver International Airport.
