Doug Horne
Coast Salish/Nuu-Chah-Nulth
(1982)
Doug (Bear) Horne was born in 1982 in Victoria, British Columbia to a family of carvers. His father Doug Lafortune, along with his uncles Perry Lafortune and Frances Horne, taught him the art of carving at a young age, completing his first carving at the age of 8. He has been professionally carving since 1998 and has completed large commissions including the “Cycle of Knowledge” house post at Camosun College, Victoria, and logos for the Orange Shirt Society in Victoria.
Horne’s carvings are often of traditional Coast Salish crests and motifs expressed through unique symbolism and unconventional forms. For example, Horne was one of the first carvers to implement sand blasting. Though he most often works with red cedar for house posts, totem poles, and paddles, he works in a variety of media including jewellery and graphics.
