Cory Bulpitt
Haida Naikun Raven Clan
(1978)
Born in 1978 in Prince Rupert, BC, Corey Bulpitt is a member of the Haida Naikun Raven clan. His Haida name is T’aak’eit G’aayaa, which means gifted carver. Great-great-grandson of famous carvers Charles Edenshaw and Louis Collison, Bulpitt continues his family legacy of cultural production.
He apprenticed at the age of 20 with his uncle, carver Christian White. This apprenticeship also included teachings on traditional Haida social structure, oral history, clan structure, music, and dance. Bulpitt has also worked with well known artists such as Beau Dick, Jim Hart, Joe David, and Dempsey Bob. He has created works for the National Gallery of Canada, Facebook Headquarters in Seattle, and The Vancouver Mural Festival.
Bulpitt’s style transcends both medium and traditional classification. Incorporating his love for hip hop culture and his traditional Haida heritage, Bulpitt blends these two together through his use of continuous lines, balance in both colour and design, and reflections on social status. He uses a variety of mediums to explore these themes, such as argillite, wood, textile, silver, gold, glass, spray paint, and traditional Kiida hand-poked tattoos.
Bulpitt was the 2017 recipient of the British Columbia Achievement First Nation Art Award, a board member of the Bill Reid Foundation, and has worked extensively with the Beat Nation collective.
