Simon (Tanis) Dick
Kwakwaka'wakw
(1951)
Simon Tanis Dick is the Grandson of hereditary Chiefs on both sides of his family. His mother was from Tsawatainieuk Kwicksutaineuk heritage, and his father was from Nax Wax Daxw descent. Born February 5, 1951 in Alert Bay, Dick grew up surrounded by his traditional culture. He was taught the Kwakwala language as well as techniques in trapping and hunting, arts, and dance by his Elders.
Dick is a member of the Hamatsa society. This society has a rigorous testing period which lasts years as admittance is based on heritage as well as performance of specific dance rituals.
His art practice includes many works referencing birds and he uses colour washes and colour bleeding, along with traditional styles, to make his pieces stand out. Dick apprenticed under master carver Chief Tony Hunt Sr. and has had a prolific career, including creating a traditional canoe for the Canadian Pavillion of Expo 68.
