Denny Dixon
Haida, Haida, Eagle Clan
(1944)
Denny Dixon, member of Eagle clan, was born in 1944 in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. He is the grandson of carver and late Chief of Eagle clan John Cross (1867-1939) and the brother of carver Pat Dixon.
Dixon was inspired by both his ancestry and carver Pat McGuire, ultimately teaching himself how to carve. He is known for his model totem poles, brooches, pendants, and boxes. He works exclusively with argillite, a dark shale found only at the quarry by Slatechuck Creek. While working at the Montreal Museum in the 1990s, Dixon gifted one of his ornate boxes to the Empress of Japan.
