Tom Hans
Haida
(1925)
Tom Hans was born in 1925 in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, on Graham Island. His family crest is the Eagle and his Haida name is Aye Aye. Hans started carving argillite at the age of 13 after encouragement and instruction from his father, Ike Hans. His career spanned over 50 years, making him one of the most prolific Haida artists of his time. Hans’ argillite works often depict Haida myths and legends with a precise attention to detail. Graham Island has the only argillite quarry in Slatechuck Creek. This quarry is only 20 km away from Hans’ hometown in Skidegate, positioning him perfectly to utilize this beautiful natural material.
