BEAR HOLDING CUB

AQJANGAJUK SHAA R.C.A. (1937-), E7-1065, CAPE DORSET / KINNGAIT
BEAR HOLDING CUB

stone, signed in syllabics, c. 1970

10" x 6.75" x 3.5" — 25.4 x 17.1 x 8.9 cm.

Provenance:
The Sparham Collection of Inuit Art, Wales, U.K.

Note:
At once the mother bear is both tender and protective of her young cub.

The white stone used in Cape Dorset during this time was very hard difficult to refine, making this carving a highly accomplished work by the artist.

Aqjangajuk became well known for subjects like his drum dancers and for sculpted and polished depictions of wildlife, often in large scale.

Estimate: $1,000—1,500
