Bio:
Patrick Amos was born in 1957 in Friendly Cove on Nootka Island on the west coast of Vancouver Island. He is part of the Mowachaht Band, one of the fourteen member tribes of the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation. As a child he attended Christie Residential School on Meares Island and subsequently studied at the Provincial Museum of British Columbia.
Amos started designing limited edition prints in 1976 and began selling his work through the Royal British Columbia Museum shop in Victoria, B.C. In 1979, he began carving wood, apprenticing with Tony Hunt Sr. at the Art of the Raven Gallery, also in Victoria. Later, he apprenticed with Tim Paul at the Royal British Columbia Museum carving shed in Victoria, where he assisted with totem pole projects. In 1990, Amos and Tim Paul carved a 36’ Hesquiaht totem pole for the Maori people of New Zealand.
Amos remains active in his community, giving carving demonstrations at various schools throughout the Port Alberni school district. Since 1991, Patrick has also taught native art classes at the Duquaht Art School in Ucluelet, BC.
