Joelee Maniapik

Settlement: Pannirtuq / Pangnirtung

(1960) — E6-905

Joel Maniapik (1960-) "I enjoy seeing my drawings and paintings woven into tapestries because they take on a new and different presence." Joel was born and raised in Pangnirtung. Influenced by his father, Towkee Maniapik, graphic artist Andrew Karpik and comic books, he decided to become an artist. He drew in pencil before trying coloured pencil and watercolours. Joel has taken workshops offered by visiting artists in woodblock printing, watercolour, pastels and oil. The Storyteller, a tapestry on display here, is the first one based on his work.
