Pitseolak Qimirpik
Settlement: Lake Harbour / Kimmirut
(1986)
Pitseolak was born in 1986 in Kinngait, Nunavut, Inuit Nunangat. He comes from a carving family, with his father being the well known carver Kellypalik Qimirpik, as well as his uncle Allashua Atsiaq and cousin Noo Atsiaq.
Qimirpik started carving at 13 as an apprentice to his father, and is known for his fusion of pop culture iconography in traditional mediums. This often includes figures like Muskoxen, dancing walruses, and drum dancers with features of pop culture as props. These props sometimes include iPods and MP3 players.
This juxtaposition of tradition and modernity allows Qimirpik to be at home in both the world of Inuit art and contemporary art.
