Note: According to curator Jean Blodgett in The Coming and Going of the Shaman, to the angakoq (shaman), the walrus is one the most significant spirit helpers along with the bear and bird. “That false teeth or tusks were used considerably in the shamanic performance is attested by numerous reports and also by recurrence, in contemporary artworks, of the motif of a human with a set of tusks... According to accounts recorded in the historic period, these teeth grew from the shaman’s mouth.”
