Always known for his outsized and eccentric personality, the subject matter of Karoo’s work became increasingly unique and otherworldly toward the end of his short career. His earliest works foreshadow something of what was to come, and as in Figure with Clenched Teeth, embody a tension between Karoo’s love of humour, and his focus on the anxious world of the spirits.
