Ask Duncan about syllabics for last name compare allie appaqaq vs. annie appaqaq Allie Appaqaq was born in the spring of 1915 or 1916. He lived a traditional life for decades. Appaqaq was one of the original carvers on the Belcher Islands; it was he who discovered the dark green deposit that has made the carvings from Sanikiluaq famous. He carved stories he remembered hearing as a boy, and scenes remembered from his days as a young hunter and traveller on the land and the sea. Appaqaq and three companions made a perilous kayak journey from the Belcher Islands to Kuujjuaraapik (Great Whale River) in the summer of 1943, all for some tobacco. He recounted the adventure in Summer 1985 issue of "Inuktitut" magazine, a year before his death. Four of Appaqaq's sons became carvers: Allie Jr., Moses, Simon and Isaac.
