(1937) — E9-1434

Inuit Artists Print Workbook kanayuk was the manager of the POV print shop for all but five of the first 26 years. Niali Ningiak (Nellie Ten) took over from 1972-77. During this time he also drew and produced more than 30 images of his own, printed for others and taught the techniques of print making. ---------- Sculpture;Prints;Printmaking - Kanayuk is the son of artist Isah Ajagutaina Tukala. As a young man, Kanayuk was one of the first wave of Povungnituk artists to become involved in printmaking. Strong management skills, a mild temperment and a shy but forceful personality made him an attractive candidate for the position of manager of the Povungnituk print shop. Beginning in the early 1960's, he was one of the youngest people to occupy this position. In 1972 he resigned from the print shop, intending to concentrate on his art, but returned in 1977, due to popular demand. He is best known for his depictions of animals. His work is included in the collections of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Royal Ontario Museum and the National Gallery of Canada, among many others. ------------------- Inuit Artists Print Workbook son of Ayagutainak kanayuk was the manager of the POV print shop for all but five of the first 26 years.
