Thomassiapik Sivuarapik
Settlement: Povungnituk / Puvirnituq
(1941) — E9-1462
Thomassiapik Sivuarapik was born on June 11, 1941 in a small camp just south of Puvirnituq. He is the son of the respected carver Charlie Sheeg, and is strongly influenced by his father’s work.
Sivuarapik works almost exclusively with stone, but sometimes incorporates bone, antler, wood, and sinew in his carvings as accents. His visual style ranges from highly detailed reproductions of Inuit myths to simplistic depictions of wildlife. Sivuarapik is known for his carvings depicting otters.
He is a very involved member of his community; taking part in the annual Ivakkak dog sled race since 2001 and advocating for better health care in the area around Puvirnituq.
Sivuarapik was chosen by his community to give carving demonstrations at the famous Expo ‘67. He has been exhibited by galleries both nationally and internationally.
