Simiuni Sivuarapik
Settlement: Povungnituk / Puvirnituq
(1946) — E9-1463
Simiuini Sivuarapik was born July 4, 1946. He lives in Povungnituk and is known for his graphic arts and carvings. Though he is a notable artist, he primarily hunts for a living; making art as a side project. He has been described as shy, very smart, and well known in his community.
Sivuarapik began his career carving ivories, but transitioned to stone carving and works on paper in his 30s due to trouble with his hands. He comes from an artistic background. His father was Charlie Sivuarapik, who was a notable carver. His brother Thomassiapik also produced prints in the 1960s, but these works were never catalogued.
Many public collections in Winnipeg and Ottawa hold Sivuarapik’s work. His pieces reside in several private collections as well.
