Leah Qumaluk

Settlement: Povungnituk / Puvirnituq

(1934-2010) — E9-1721

Inuit Artists print Workbook is a maor and prolific artist and printer. She is one of the 8 or 9 pioneers who stayed with the print program for over a quarter of a century. Leah has cut or printed most of her own stones, some 100 in 20 collections, and has done the print editions for another 50 images of others. Her work is often eerie and full of legendary illusions, adding a dimension to the collections on a completely different level from many of the other artists, who prefer to depict every day activities or "the old ways" (Interview POV, 6/87). was married to Josie Qumaluk, mother of Lucassie Qumaluk and Louisa Qumaluk ----------------- www.carleton.ca/gallery/Creature/Bios.html# Leah Qumaluk (B.1934) Puvungnituk Leah Qumaluk joined a famous family of Puvungnituk artists when she married Josie Qumaluk. She was present at the print shop in Puvungnituk when the first tentative attempts at printmaking began. She has authored at least 95 prints, mostly stone cuts, and printed literally hundreds for other artists. For many years she cut blocks at home in her spare time and then worked from nine to five at the print shop. She retired in 1985. Qumaluk's signature oversized birds kick up their heels with a human neighbor. Qumaluk's animals are always full of expression and personality.
