Jacoposie Tiglilk

Settlement: Pannirtuq / Pangnirtung

(1952) — E6-656

Jacoposie was born at Illutalik camp. At the age of 10, he contracted tuberculosis and had to be sent to Hamilton, Ontario for treatment. Around the same time, he lost his mother and two siblings. In 1967, he and the remaining members of his family moved to Pangnirtung. Roughly 10 years later, Jacoposie joined the Pangnirtung print shop as a printmaker. In addition to printing other peoples' works, he has done many drawings for the print shop and the Pangnirtung Tapestry Studio. He acknowledges the influence of his uncle and mentor, artist Lypa Pitsiulak on his work.

Jacoposie is best known for his graceful, lyrical rendering of birds. His drawings are based on actual birds, unlike the magical and supernatural birds of other Pangnirtung artists. Although rooted in realism, his birds are highly stylized, with an emphasis on the elegant shape of their wings.
