Simon Shaimaiyuk

Settlement: Pannirtuq / Pangnirtung

(1915-1999) — E6-368

Simon Shaimaijuk (1915-2000) date of death is also listed as 1999 uncle of Rose Okpik and Josephee Kilabuk, brother of Jim Kilabuk "I draw what comes to my mind from the days when I was young and try to make it close to what I have seen. It is very hard to come up with an idea sometimes, so I just doodle and erase until an idea appears. Somehow I want to show how hard life was for the older generation of men." Born at Umanajuaq camp, Simon moved his young family to Pangnirtung in the 1960s. He was well acquainted with the harsh life of a nomadic hunter. Once, while seal hunting, he was cast adrift on a pan of ice that broke away. For several days, he moved from one piece of ice to another, sleeping on those that were most solid. Exhausted and terrified of losing his life, Simon dreamt of the creatures that would later people his drawings. --------- Simon Shaimaijuk (1915-2000) "I draw what comes to my mind from the days when I was young and try to make it close to what I have seen.
