Lipa Pitsiulak

Settlement: Pannirtuq / Pangnirtung

(1943-2010) — E6-436

also used "pitseolak" symbol married to Annie Pitsiulak, son of Markosie pitsiulak, and father of Malaya Pitsiulak Lypa Pitsiulak (1943-) "If there had been a writing system a long time ago, we would have been able to read and hear many touching stories about the Inuit way of life. Even though they didn't have a writing system, the Inuit stories were kept alive by telling them to others by memory. The Inuit had such stories and memories in their minds for a long time. I can do the same thing." Born at Illutalik camp, Lypa moved to Pangnirtung in 1967 and became a successful printmaker and sculptor. In 1977, he moved his family to an outpost camp, where he makes a living today as an artist and hunter. He is the subject of the film Lypa, produced by the National Film Board. Two of the tapestries on display here were inspired by Lypa's drawings depicting epic myths from Inuit oral history. Lypa is a visual storyteller par excellence. ------------------------- Lypa Pitsuilak (B.1943) Pangnirtung http://www.carleton.ca/gallery/Creature/Bios.html# Born in 1943 at Cumberland Sound, Lypa Pitsiulak moved to Pangnirtung in 1967. Later he decided to move closer to the land in the traditional camp of Upingavik. Before paper and pencils were available he tried drawing in the frost on windows made from animal intestine. He then began to draw seriously. Lypa Pitsiulak's print Disguised Archer, from the 1976 Pangnirtung Print Collection, was reproduced on a Canadian stamp. In 1984 he received an Exploration Grant from the Canada Council to enable him to produce a manuscript describing his life style, illustrated with his own carvings and graphics. In 1988 the NFB produced "Lypa" a film about his life and work. ----------- Pitseolak, Lipa - Pangnirtung, NU Renowned for his ability to tell stories in stone, Lipa Pitseolak is a master sculptor whose work can be found in collections around the globe. An Invited Artist, we are honoured that Lipa has accepted to join us this year. Born in 1943 at Cumberland Sound, Lipa Pitsiulak moved to Pangnirtung in 1967. He later decided to live back on the land in the traditional camp of Upingavik. An accomplished artist, Lipa is also known for drawings. His print The Disguised Archer, from the 1976 Pangnirtung Print Collection, was reproduced on a Canadian stamp in 1977. In 1984 he received grant from the Canada Council to produce a manuscript describing his lifestyle, illustrated with his own carvings and graphics. In 1988 the NFB produced "Lipa" a film about his life and his work. ------------------ www.uqqurmiut.com Year of Birth: 1943 Place of Birth: Illutalik, Baffin Island, Nunavut Lipa Pitsiulak moved to Pangnirtung in 1967 and became a successful printmaker and sculptor. One of his early prints, "The Disguised Archer," was made into a Canadian postage stamp. In 1977, Lipa moved his family to an outpost camp, where he makes a living today as an artist and hunter. He is the subject of the film Lipa, produced by the National Film Board. Over the years, a number of Lipa's drawings have been made into prints and tapestries by the artists who work collectively in the Pangnirtung Print Shop and the Pangnirtung Tapestry Studio. Lipa's drawings and prints typically depict aspects of Inuit mythology passed down through oral storytelling over many generations. His interest in mythology and Inuit spirituality is also clearly evident in his carvings. Lipa is a visual storyteller par excellence. ---------------- Pitsiulak, Lipa Laban;Lypa;Pitseolak; Technique: Drawing;Sculpture;Printmaking Sex: Female Address: Pangnirtung Northwest Territories Canada Born: 21 April 1943 Iglootalik Northwest Territories Canada File Location: National Gallery of Canada - Library and Archives Winnipeg Art Gallery - Clara Lander Library -------------- Lipa Pitsiulak (Liban; lypa; Pitseolak) Born: April 21, 1943 Male E6-436 Resides: Pangnirtung; also lived in Igloolik Sculpture, Drawings, Prints Born in 1943 at Cumberland Sound, Lypa Pitsiulak moved to Pangnirtung in 1967.
