Romeo Ekerkik began carving in the early 1960s, while he was living in Tikiraruaq (Whale Cove), north of Arviat. His wife, the late Martha Iperiak, was well-known for her beaded wallhangings. Romeo would often carve the antler faces that she would sew into her wallhangings.
"Eekerkik's carvings reflect his traditional life as a hunter. Rather than presenting solitary figures 'with nothing surrounding them' he prefers
to create composite scenes which portray the pursuit of the animal or the hunter's successful capture of his prey."*
Romeo carved with a variety of materials, but was well-known for his creative and unique works in antler. "During the mid-70s, Eekerkik began to use a propane torch, burning marks into his figures to enliven the bleached whiteness of the antler."* He also used paint to highlight or provide colourful detail antler sculpture.
