Andrew Karpik

Settlement: Pannirtuq / Pangnirtung

(1964) — E6-1080

uses personal chop on some prints married to Annie Qappik, father of Samantha Qappik, nephew of Imoona Karpik Andrew Karpik (B.1964) Pangnirtung http://www.carleton.ca/gallery/Creature/Bios.html# Andrew Karpik landed a job at the print making co-op in Pangirtung at a young age. He states that drawing has been his main goal since he was eight. He started by copying Marvel Comics and just kept on practicing (Hessel, 1998). Karpik says his drawings are dedicated to his ancestors who suffered and struggled for their lives, for food and for clothing. According to Ingo Hessel, relatively few young Inuit have chosen to pursue the graphic arts, as carving lures many teenagers and young adults with a promise of quick cash and a certain prestige. Graphic programs still heavily rely on the images drawn by a dwindling number of elders (Inuit Art, 1998 Andrew Karpik (1964-) "The drawings I do are for the people who suffered and struggled for their lives - for food and clothing. What strength was used by our great-grandfathers in their livelihood. That is what I show in my drawings. I make an adventure and share my art with the people of any country who love my art." Although he is the youngest artist represented in this exhibition, Andrew has probably received the most recognition for his talent. He designed Nunavut's flag and the monumental tapestry commissioned for the Iqaluit visitors' centre, called Our Ancestors' Land Is Our Land Now. Andrew's highly realistic style is much admired by the weavers tapestry artists and printmakers in Pangnirtung. ----------- Andrew Karpik, a second-generation artist, explains that in this day and age, transformations occur in humans with an open mind. Today we know a lot about other ways of life and when we fully understand these new ways of looking at the world, this knowledge becomes a part of us (Hessel, 1998). ----------
