Jaco started carving at the age of sixteen. He learned by watching his grandfather and has since enjoyed making sculptures from antler, ivory, whalebone and, more particularly, stone. His favourite subjects include people, birds and other animals. He also enjoys portraying images from stories told by his grandfather, as well as images from his own mind. Jaco also enjoys drawing and jewellery-making. Several members of Jaco's family are involved in the arts. His mother Elisapee, brother Lazalusie, and sisters Rosie and Jessie are all active artists in Pangnirtung and Iqaluit. --------------- Jaco Ishulutaq (b. 1951 -) is a proficient artist who commenced carving at the age of sixteen and learned many skills from his grandfather. He has worked with antler, ivory and whalebone but particularly prefers working with stone. Several of his family members are also established artists including his mother Elisapee, brother Lazaloosie, and sisters Rosie and Jessie. "Standing Walrus" is a highly polished and well executed, larger sized sculpture. Ishulutaq has paid particular attention to such sensitive areas as the eyes and facial features. He has also nicely carved large tusks for this walrus which combined with the raised visual center of gravity, support the impression of motion and the walrus lunging forward. The sculpture is carved from an attractive and highly polished piece of marbled brownish serpentinite from the Pangnirtung area, Baffin Island. The walrus tusks are carved from caribou antler and are detachable. ------- www.uqqurmiut.com Year of Birth: 1951 Place of Birth: Pangnirtung, Baffin Island, Nunavut Jaco started carving at the age of sixteen, encouraged by his mother, the well-known artist Eleesapee Ishulutaq. He learned about technique by watching his grandfather, and he is equally comfortable with antler, ivory, whalebone, and soapstone. Jaco has also produced graphics work for the archives at the Uqqurmiut Centre, choosing images based on stories told by his grandfather. Some of his drawings have been used by the Pangnirtung printmakers and weavers in their annual collections. Today Jaco is the most prolific carver in the area, and he makes an excellent living from his art. His pieces are highly sought and are exhibited in fine art galleries all over the world. An active participant in Pangnirtung community life, Jaco also instructs wilderness survival courses and volunteers to serve with the Pangnirtung Rangers, a local rescue and security team. ----------------------- JACO ISHULUTAQ (ESHULUTAK; EESHUGLUTAK; ESULUKTAK) Born: February 15, 1951 Male E6-619 Place of Birth: Pangnirtung Resides: Pangnirtung Sculpture, Tapestries Jaco Ishulutaq started carving at the age of sixteen. He learned by watching his grandfather and has since enjoyed making medium-sized sculptures from antler, ivory, whalebone and, more particularly, stone. His favourite subjects include people, birds and other animals. Jaco also enjoys drawing and jewellery-making, but no longer works in the former medium because it is not as lucrative as sculpting. When making jewellery Jaco prefers using soapstone to ivory for personal reasons. Several members of Jaco's family are involved in the arts. His mother, Elisapee, brother Lazalusie, and sisters Rosie and Jessie are all active artists in Pangnirtung and Iqaluit.
