Gyta Eeseemailee

Settlement: Pannirtuq / Pangnirtung

(1955) — E6-755

son of Atungauyak Eeseemailie, brother of Jeanie Eeseemailie Gyta Eeseemailie (1955-) Born at Umanajuaq camp, Gyta learned to draw by watching his father, well-known artist Atungauja Eeseemailie. At the age of 14, he began hanging around the Pangnirtung print shop and was asked to do a drawing. In 1980, he became a printmaker and has since learned the techniques taught and used at the print shop. In addition to drawing and printmaking, Gyta has a seasonal job as a park warden at Auyuittuq National Park. Gyta's early drawings have clearly defined outlines that reveal his training as a printmaker. He feels that looking at tapestries and doing drawings for the Pangnirtung Tapestry Studio have influenced his style, particularly with regard to background.
