Malaya Akulukjuk

-mother of May Lonsdale, Enookie, Geetaloo, Geeshee and Juelee Akulukjuk, sister of Martha Kakee Malaya Akulukjuk (1912-1995) "When I start drawing, I imagine it in my mind, then after I have done that, I let it sit and think more about it." Born at Qikituq camp, Malaya moved to Pangnirtung after all her family's dogs succumbed to disease. A formidable person who loved to hunt, she married only at the age of 20, and much against her will. Even then, she continued to hunt, sometimes taking a group of women with her. Malaya had 15 children, and often she hunted while pregnant or carrying a baby in her hood. She was much admired and respected in the community of Pangnirtung. Malaya was one of the main contributors of drawings to the Pangnirtung Tapestry Studio, especially during its first 10 years. Many of her drawings introduce us to the world of spirits, which featured prominently in the consciousness of her generation. Although not openly acknowledged, she was reputed to be a shaman. This helps to explain her access to the spirit world. -------------------
