MOTHER NURSING HER CHILD

stone, signed in syllabics with disc number inscribed, c. 1968

8 x 7 x 7 in — 20.3 x 17.8 x 17.8 cm

Note:
Both of Isa Smiler’s parents died from an illness that was spread from a supply ship when he was just nine years old. This carving of a mother nursing her child, is suggestive to that past experience and mirrors his longing and deep value of family, something that is very much central to Inuit culture.
