Harry Elijassiapik

Settlement: Port Harrison / Inukjuak

(1943) — E9-918

http://www.inuitplus.com/indiv.asp?search=05-70232&ID=19431&ref=%2Fcommunity.asp%3Fsearch%3Dcomm_32%26ID%3D19431 Harry Elijassiapik (b.1943 -) is a very talented and experienced artist from a well established carving family. Both his late father and his elder brothers, Eli and Simeonie Elijassiapik, are well known and respected carvers. Eli was also past president of La Federation des Cooperatives du Nouveau Quebec. Harry has portrayed an Inuk carrying two bundles of rope. This narrative composition both displays a fair amount of detail and is an uncommon subject for a sculpture. The upper bundle of rope lies about the Inuk's neck and displays open or "negative" space both within the loop and above his chest. This detail adds to the "risk" factor the artist faces during carving. Nice detail is also found in the facial expression and incised detail for the hair. Harry has captured the motion of the Inuk walking by bending his right leg. This portrayal of a waddled walk conveys the awkwardness the Inuk faces in carrying the bundles of rope. The latter is more visibly discernible by viewing the back of the piece.
