Elijassiapik
POLAR BEAR
ELIJASSIAPIK (1912-1972), E9-915, Inukjuak
POLAR BEAR, stone, ivory, ca. 1958, 7" x 11" x 5.25" — 17.8 x 27.9 x 13.3 cm.
Est. $4,000/6,000
Note: Excerpt from collector’s memoir: In the Fall of 1957 I was in Montreal with Jim Houston attending the launch of the Inuit carving sale by the Canadian Handicrafts Guild. In the back room, Jim pointed out a carving of a running Polar Bear (#49), which had one broken leg. Jim pointed out the artistic impact of this powerful work despite the need for repair. As I recall, I bought it for about five dollars and subsequently had it repaired.
