SHAMAN TRANSFORMING INTO MUSK OX
JUDAS ULLULAQ (1937-1998), E4-342, Gjoa Haven
SHAMAN TRANSFORMING INTO MUSK OX, stone, antler, 12" x 12" — 30.5 x 30.5 cm.
Est. $7,000/10,000
Provenance: Collected directly from the artist by the vendor while working on an Arctic cargo ship in the early 1990s.
Note: It was described to the vendor by Judas (through an interpreter) that the work depicts a Shaman whose animal skin parka is infested with worms. A worm is seen entering the shaman's ear on the right side of the piece. This induces the transformation into a musk ox and is the cause for the grimacing facial expression.
