He works with Coral Harbour limestone and soapstone. He began carving in the 1960's. Born: March 18, 1937 Male E3-778 Resides: Coral Harbour Medium: Sculpture Johnny Kataluk lives in Salliq on Southampton Island to the northwest of Hudson Bay, a small, relatively unknown community. In 1902 the original Sallirmiut population was wiped out from disease introduced by European whalers. Salliq was gradually populated by a blend of many Inuit who migrated from Baffin Island, Arctic Quebec and the mainland (Keewatin) area. Kataluk himself moved from Arctic Quebec as a child. Johnny has been quietly carving for over thirty years, his work only recently becoming known to those outside his community. He usually works in the local grey stone of the area. Johhny is known for his sleek, simplistic style, and his depictions of Sedna the sea godess.
