Elder Olassie Machmer is a contestant for the Inuit traditional clothing contest in Pangnirtung on Tuesday, National Indigenous Peoples Day. Pangnirtung’s recreation committee has celebrated the day with this contest for a few years. Recreation co-ordinator Rosemary Alivaktuk said that day is meant “to celebrate our cultures; Inuit, First Nations and Indigenous cultures all around the world.” In previous years, Alivaktuk remembers the hamlet organizing a picnic and gathering for a feast. This year, there was a dance at the arena to end the day. (Photo by Lisa Milosavljevic)

The Hamlet of Pangnirtung celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day with a traditional Inuit clothing contest. It was the first event in the hamlet’s celebration. Asked how non-Indigenous people should spend the day, the hamlet’s recreation co-ordinator Rosemary Alivaktuk said, “Just be around people and celebrate with them.” (Photo by Lisa Milosavljevic)
