Kimmirut youth gain traditional knowledge and life skills on the land

A group of Kimmirut youth spent five days camping in Katannilik Territorial Park, and learning from community elders in Inuktitut. Six elders transmitted their Qaujimajatuqangit, or traditional knowledge, to fifteen campers who learned skills such as weather observation, plant identification, and navigation. This year's camp was organized by Nunavut Parks and Special Places. Caroline Ipeelie-Qiatsuk, a heritage appreciation regional co-ordinator with Nunavut Parks, says that, "unintentionally, this … became a life skills, a way of life kind of thing, with the elders leading the camp the whole time."
